Liverpool reject Southampton’s Takumi Minamino request after completing loan

During the closing phases of the transfer window, Takumi Minamino joined Southampton on loan from Liverpool, but the Japan international will return to Anfield in the future.

Minamino joined the RB Salzburg Premier League champions 12 months ago, but only scored four goals in 31 games in all competitions with a marginal impact.

Minamino’s chances have been reduced by the strong rivalry for positions in Liverpool’s forward line, but Jurgen Klopp still sees a future for the flexible forward at Liverpool, according to The Athletic, and turned down Southampton’s offer to include an option to buy clause in the deal.

Overall, for the rest of the season, Southampton will pay Liverpool £ 500,000 to retain the forward, and Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, whose team has recently failed to score goals, is adamant his new arrival is capable of making an immediate impact.

‘I am very happy to welcome Takumi to our squad for the remainder of the season,’ said the Austrian, whose team this evening will take on Manchester United.

He will help provide another strong attacking choice, and is the right player profile for us, basically.

‘I see us generating a lot of openings and it’s only a matter of time before we score again, but at the moment it doesn’t bother me.’

Ozan Kabak joined Schalke on loan and if the 20-year-old impresses, the contract will be made permanent for £ 18 m in the future, while fellow youngster Ben Davies was signed in a £ 2 m deal from Preston.
